Appetizer Recipes From Our 1986 Book

Recipes that never get old from 1986.

Our members have been sharing recipes for more than a century. The following appetizer recipes were included in the Royal Neighbors of America 1986 Cookbook.

Cheese Ball

Ingredients
2 large pkgs. cream cheese, softened
2 pkgs. smoked ham, chopped fine
1 tbsp. minced onion flakes
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. milk

Instructions
Set aside ½ cup of the chopped ham. Soak onion flakes in hot water for 20 minutes, drain, then mix with all the rest of the ingredients and chill for ½ hour. Form into a ball and roll in chopped ham. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Hot Taco Dip

Ingredients
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 Cracker Barrel cheese, white with jalapenos
1 box frozen chopped broccoli, thawed
1 lb. Velveeta® cheese

Instructions
Cut cheese and melt with soup; add broccoli. Serve hot with taco chips.

Doggies

Ingredients
12 oz. bottle chili sauce
10 oz. grape jam
1 lb. hot dogs or cocktail hot dogs

Instructions
Mix sauce and jam thoroughly, heat for about 30 minutes. Put sauce in a fondue pot. Slice hot dogs about ½ inch thick, put in sauce, heat, and keep warm in fondue pot. Use cocktail toothpicks for serving.

Chalet Ham Dip

Ingredients
4 ½ oz. can deviled ham
8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. prepared mustard
2 tbsp. milk

Instructions
Thoroughly combine first four ingredients. Gradually add milk, stirring until smooth. Serve as a dip for Swiss cheese crackers. Makes about 1  cups dip. (Very good with cheddar cheese crackers, also.)

Radish and Cream Cheese Spread

Ingredients
8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
¼ cup butter or margarine, softened
½ tsp. celery salt
Dash paprika
½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 cup finely chopped radishes
¼ cup finely chopped green onions

Instructions
Mix cheese, butter, celery salt, paprika, and Worcestershire together until smooth. Stir in radishes and onions. Chill several hours to blend flavors. Spread on whole wheat crackers. Makes 1 ½ cups.

Spinach Dip

Ingredients
1 pkg. frozen chopped spinach
8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 cup salad dressing
1 pkg. Lipton®’s Country Vegetable Soup Mix

Instructions
Mix together all the ingredients. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Easy Pate

Ingredients
1 lb. liverwurst or Braunschweiger
1 cup sour cream
¼ cup chopped green onion
1 tsp. instant beef bouillon

Instructions
Combine all ingredients and beat until smooth. Serve on Melba Rounds or crackers.

Egg and Caviar Dip

Ingredients
2 to 3 hard-cooked eggs, chopped
2 tbsp. chopped onion, red or yellow
¼ cup mayonnaise
2 tbsp. black or red caviar, or 1 tbsp. of each color

Instructions
In medium-size mixing bowl, combine eggs, onion, and mayonnaise. Mix until smooth with a fork or spoon. Spread the mixture in a shallow serving bowl or dish. Carefully cover the surface with a single layer of caviar. Designs may be made with the caviar. Or cover only half of the surface for those who do not care for caviar. Serve with crackers. Makes 4 servings.
