Past scholarship recipient Amy Geenen has dreamed of working in the health care field since she was a little girl. She currently attends the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, pursuing a Therapeutic Recreation degree with a pre-Occupational Therapy track. Amy will graduate in Spring 2022, then complete a summer internship.
“Receiving a scholarship from Royal Neighbors gives me more financial stability,” said Amy. “I have the freedom to participate in clubs and volunteer my time.” Amy is an active member in Youth and Government, Circle K, Pre-Occupational Therapy Club, and Recreation Therapy Club. She also volunteers at Easterseals’ Wisconsin Camp, leading activities for people with disabilities and helping with personal care.
Amy works as a Resident Assistant on campus to help with finances as well. “I enjoy getting to know my residents, answering their questions, and being part of their support system,” said Amy.
During summer and winter breaks, Amy returns to her hometown of West Bend, Wisconsin, to work as a Life Engagement Coach and concierge at New Perspective Senior Living. “It has been a great way for me to gain experience for therapeutic recreation and occupational therapy,” added Amy. “I enjoy helping others improve their quality of life and assisting with tasks most of us take for granted.”
After graduation, Amy will apply for occupational therapy school, followed by graduate school. “The scholarship gives me further inspiration to work hard and strive to represent the Royal Neighbors mission to the best of my ability,” said Amy.
