Eight Decades of Membership: Betty Ellington’s Royal Journey

When Royal Neighbors’ Philanthropy Lead Angie Bardsley made her way to Coffeen, Ill., she knew she was meeting a longtime member. What she didn’t expect was to walk away inspired by a woman whose story is as resilient as it is remarkable.

Betty Ellington has been a proud member of Chapter 1729 for 80 years. Her connection to Royal Neighbors began in the most unexpected way.

At only nine years old, Betty suffered a life-threatening injury during what was meant to be a routine electric perm. The burns were so severe that doctors inserted four drains in her scalp and feared she might not survive. But Betty pulled through—and shortly after her recovery, her mother recognized the importance of financial protection and purchased a Royal Neighbors policy for her.

“My mother purchased a $1,000 policy and that was a lot of money back then,” Ms. Ellington said. “Thankfully, after this ordeal, I have been blessed to live a long and fulfilling life.”

“At just 11, Betty became a certificateholder, beginning a relationship that would grow into a lifelong legacy and community impact,” Angie said. “It was an honor to hear her story and to witness the impact she has made as a member of Royal Neighbors.”

Over the decades, Betty has remained an active contributor to her chapter and community. In recognition of her extraordinary service, Angie presented her with 50- and 75-year member pins, a tradition that celebrates Royal Neighbors’ most loyal members. She also brought along eight white roses, the official flower of Royal Neighbors, and presented one for each decade Betty has spent making a difference.

Betty’s story is more than a tale of perseverance; it’s a shining example of what it means to be a Royal Neighbor.
