Gloria Mancilla is the recipient of a 2023 Nation of Neighbors℠ empowerment award and a $10,000 grant.
Inspired by her faith and desire to serve her Hispanic community, Gloria launched a monthly food pantry at St. Anthony’s Church in Davenport, Iowa. The pantry serves around 40 families each month.
Gloria plans to use the Nation of Neighbors grant to expand the food pantry and create Casa Guadalupe – a nonprofit community resource center with a mission to support individuals regardless of their legal status and background. “During the winter months, we see a significant increase in the families we serve,” said Gloria. “This grant will help us serve more families and respond to the increased need in the colder months.”
Casa Guadalupe will provide a more sustainable foundation for the food pantry, offer education in Spanish regarding issues that impact the Hispanic community, and allow Gloria to begin fundraising.
“I have encountered many wonderful and caring people who helped my family in times of great need,” shared Gloria. “This is my opportunity to give back!”
